This exhibition explores the Black Madonna as a symbol of resilience, transformation, and reverence, alongside broader expressions of sacredness in Black, Brown and Indigenous communities through visual art, performance, sound, and storytelling.

Our goals are to create spaces for healing, dialogue, and reflection; amplify underrepresented & marginalized voices; foster community engagement through art and wellness programming; and collaborate with partners who share our vision of cultural and spiritual transformation.

The exhibition highlights a dynamic roster of local, national, and international Black, Brown & Indigenous artists, including painters, sculptors, performance artists, sound artists, and healers, all exploring sacred themes through diverse mediums.

We are committed to creating an inclusive experience by offering wheelchair-accessible spaces, ASL interpretation, sensory kits, virtual tours, and multilingual materials to ensure that all visitors can engage fully with our exhibitions and programs.

How can I attend The Black Madonna & Other Sacred Spaces?
The exhibition will be open to the public at the Urban Arts Space in Columbus, Ohio, from July to August 2026. Detailed information about visiting hours, programs, and special events will be announced closer to the opening date.

Through artist talks, sound baths, workshops, performances, film screenings, and collaborative rituals, we intentionally design programs that invite participation, conversation, and shared reflection across different communities and generations.

How are artists and curators compensated?
We believe in equitable pay for creative labor. Through grants, donations and partnerships we hope to provide all artists with honorariums. Additionally, our curators are paid a living wage that reflects the scope of their work, including exhibition development, public programming, and community engagement.

Will the artwork be for sale during the exhibition?
Yes, many of the works in The Black Madonna & Other Sacred Spaces may be available for purchase. Pricing and availability will be listed in the exhibition materials, and inquiries can be directed to the curatorial team. 100% of all sales goes to the artist(s).
